We had the opportunity to interview Ron Sullivan owner of Dance Hill Collection, a sculpting company.  Ron started Dance Hill Collection in 2004.  Ron has a second home in Jamaica in the country on a hill and he really loves it out there. While at his home in Jamaica, he was thinking about how God has blessed him. This made him feel so happy to the point where he could just break out and dance. Hence the name of his sculpting company became Dance Hill Collection . An artist he came across from Zimbabwe inspired him and he initially wanted to import this artist’s work and sell it. After doing research Ron realized that importing the sculptures was not going to be a cost effective business venture.  So Ron decided to give sculpting a try.  The first sculpting was with stone, similar to the artist, from Zimbabwe but it turns out that is takes more tools and usually more patience to work with stone.  Ron switched to working with wood because it was more accessible and offered greater variety.  Ron is comfortable working both with stone and wood though, and does not have a preference.    Dance Hill Collection is a hobby for Ron.  He did not start Dance Hill with a desire to make money.   This is truly a creative outlet for Ron and he enjoys the creativity of this hobby and he is excited to see where it takes him. He finds stone and wood sculpting fascinating and appealing in terms of its abstract nature.  First, he began giving his sculptures to friends and shortly after relocating to Atlanta he hosted his first home show and it turned out very well.  Currently Ron sends out publications to let his clientele know what new pieces he has available.  He also has been participating in shows for the past two to three years where many people are able to see his artwork. Ron is not focused on sales but rather his artistic growth. He pushes himself to work  on four to five pieces at a time.  Ron finds most of his wood by driving around and collecting wood from tree trunks, bringing wood from his 2nd home in Jamaica (on the hill) and sometimes he gets it from Craig’s list ads.  He rarely has to purchase the wood.  Most of Dance Hill Collection clients are friends, family, and church members.  One of Ron’s favorite pieces is a vase that is very simple and elegant. Completing a sculpture can take anywhere from a week to a month.  Ron also has a project that he has been sculpting for three years!! (I cannot wait to see the final masterpiece!!)  Ron is about four to five years from retirement and he is planning on working on more sculptures.  His newest interest includes crafting wood furniture.  I had no idea that there are some many types of wood and that that there is stone so soft that you can sculpt it with your fingernail! It was inspiring to see someone who enjoys what they do. I also was able to show Ron my experience with a huge log I wanted to use as a prop but  I quickly realized it was not going to work because the log was so heavy.  I guess I should have figured that out when the guy used a forklift to put it in my truck.  Anyway, Ron offered to hollow out the log for me so I can use my log (smiles!!!).  Currently Ron has entered a prestigious competition in Kingston, Jamaica.  This show is held every year and this is the first year Dance Hill Collection has entered.  I am excited to see how the competition turns out.  Ron has some amazing sculptures and I was so interested to hear about how Ron has perfected his craft.
